Retinal laser
Retinal laser treatment is used to specifically treat pathological changes in the retina—such as retinal holes, retinal tears, or vascular changes associated with diabetes.
The goal is to stabilize the retina, prevent further damage, and preserve vision as much as possible. In cases of retinal holes or tears, the laser can “seal” the affected area, thereby reducing the risk of retinal detachment.
Common causes and risk factors
Retinal laser treatment may be necessary for various retinal conditions, particularly:
- Retinal holes or retinal tears
- increased risk of retinal detachment
- diabetic retinopathy
- Vascular occlusions or leaky blood vessels
- Changes in the peripheral retina
- Consequences of a vitreous detachment
- severe nearsightedness
Retinal holes or tears are often caused by age-related changes in the vitreous humor, disease, or injury. If fluid enters the space beneath the retina through a tear, it can lead to retinal detachment.

Diagnosis
The diagnosis is made through an eye exam. Depending on the findings, visual acuity, the back of the eye, and the retina are examined in detail after the pupil has been dilated.
In addition, retinal photography, OCT, fluorescein angiography, or ultrasound may be used. It is particularly important to carefully examine the peripheral retina, as retinal holes or tears often develop there without being noticed.
Retinal laser treatment
During laser treatment, targeted laser pulses are applied to the affected areas of the retina. This creates small scar points that stabilize the retina or treat abnormal blood vessels.
Retinal laser treatment can be used to seal retinal holes or tears, prevent retinal detachment, treat leaking blood vessels, or slow the progression of diabetic retinopathy.
The procedure is usually performed on an outpatient basis. The eye is prepared with eye drops, and the pupil is dilated. Afterward, vision may be temporarily blurred.
When is a laser not enough?
Retinal laser treatment is particularly effective for retinal holes, retinal tears, or certain vascular changes. If the retina has already partially or completely detached, laser treatment is usually no longer sufficient. In such cases, surgery is often necessary.
Follow-up and post-treatment care
After retinal laser treatment, follow-up appointments are important to check the treated area. You may experience temporary glare, blurred vision, or mild discomfort.
If you experience new flashes of light, numerous black spots, shadows, a sensation of a curtain falling over your vision, or a noticeable decline in vision, you should see an ophthalmologist immediately.

Poor eyesight

- Nearsightedness / Myopia: Clear up close, blurry at a distance
- Farsightedness / Hyperopia: Distance vision is usually better, while near vision is blurry
- Astigmatism: distorted or blurry vision
- Presbyopia: difficulty reading and seeing up close starting around age 40
Refractive errors can usually be corrected effectively with glasses, contact lenses, or other methods.

Macular degeneration
Macular degeneration refers to a group of diseases that affect the macula - a crucial area of the retina that is responsible for central vision.
This region allows us to see fine details such as letters when reading, faces, colors and more. The most common form is age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which can occur in dry and wet forms.
In addition, certain factors such as diabetes, circulatory disorders of the retina or severe short-sightedness can increase the risk of macular diseases.
Corneal diseases
Corneal diseases affect the clear front layer of the eye and can significantly impair vision.
Common forms include:
- Keratitis: inflammation of the cornea, often accompanied by redness, pain, and blurred vision
- Keratoconus: Thinning and deformation of the cornea
- Corneal dystrophies: mostly genetically caused opacities
- Changes associated with dry eye: superficial damage caused by insufficient lubrication
- Age-related changes: for example, corneal guttata or Fuchs' endothelial dystrophy
An accurate diagnosis is important for determining the appropriate treatment and preserving vision as much as possible.
Eyelid Disorders
Eyelid disorders include various types of inflammation, deformities, and changes in the eyelids. These include styes, chalazia, blepharitis, contact allergies, drooping eyelids, ptosis, eyelid deformities, and benign or malignant changes in the eyelids.
